Learning Under the Moon: Solar Eclipse
August 21, 2017
In Dwight, we will experience a partial eclipse on the first day back to school! We understand the gravity of such an event (pun intended) and wish to include this celestial occurrence in our first day activities. The eclipse will begin at 11:54 a.m. and end at 2:42 p.m. The peak of coverage will occur at approximately 1:20 p.m.
STUDENTS GRADES 3-8
Students in grades 3-8 will convene outside from 1:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. to view the eclipse; however parent permission must be granted in order to view it. (Permission slip document provided below; print copies will also be made available at Open House.) We have 600 Eclipse glasses for student and staff use; they were purchased through American Paper Optics and are ISO 12312-2 certified. If you do not wish for your child to participate, he/she will view the eclipse in the gymnasium via the NASA website with other students. Safety is paramount, so we will supervise your child to the best of our ability. However, please understand that permanent eye damage can occur if safety procedures are not followed; therefore, we encourage parents to review safety protocol (included on the back of the permission slip) with the child.
STUDENTS K-2
K-2nd grade students will stay indoors in the gymnasium to view the live feed via NASA's website. However, if you wish for your child to view the eclipse outside, you must sign the permission slip. (See permission document link below.) Your K-2 student will be placed in a small group (3-5 students) to maximize supervision and will be outside for only a few minutes at a time. Please note: if the glasses do not properly fit your child, he or she will not be able to view the eclipse for safety reasons. PreK students will be conducting activities in their respective classrooms.
Note: PERMISSION MUST BE PROVIDED ON THE OFFICIAL SLIP ; NO VERBAL OR EMAIL COMMUNICATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED.
*Event may be cancelled due to inclement weather.
*If you made previous plans to attend an out-of-town, special Eclipse event that requires a partial-day absence from school, please contact Mr. Bailey at [email protected]. Thanks!
